Town garden

Do you think Southington should have a community garden where people could have a plot to grow their own fruits and vegetables? Would you use it? Should a fee be charged?

Community Garden

I think Southington should have a community garden.
It is a nice thing to do for those who have no space to garden on their own property or their property is unusable. I think it would be good to try various formats for obtaining a plot. Possibly by having a lottery each year open to all who aspire to garden. It would be good to have water readily available. It would be good if gardeners prepared their own soil with organic materials and not use pesticides unless they are approved of by a "Master Gardener" for use in garden. Ideas to consider about use of a garden plot. Each gardener/family must apply yearly in order to give new gardeners the opportunity to tend a garden. However it would be good to have rotational plots (not getting the same plot year after year - which allows everyone fair opportunity for "the best spot". Gardeners should produce fresh foods which a percent of produce portions could be given regularly to local homeless shelters and soup kitchens as it becomes available, or produce could be sold at a weekly Community Market Day (along with other community vendors/grocers) with a percent of proceeds going to "Soup Kitchens"or homeless shelters, homes for battered women as long as it was designated for purchasing "fresh" fruits and produce, or specific items -(no junk food) and a percent to go back into the community garden for garden expenses that occur. ( maybe stuff like garden hoses, shared equipment, tools, soil conditioners)
I think it is rare when these places get fresh produce for the people to eat. They often are given leftover pastries and breads, but if you think about how much starch and sugar are in their diets and not healthy food, then how are many of them going to get back on their feet by eating food that is unhealthy for them. I think each gardeners should keep in mind food that can help people stay healthy. When you bless others, you get blessed.
At then end of the garden season each gardener will be responsible for clearing their plot of weeds, personal garden items etc... and a lottery should take place as soon as the clearing is accomplished so new gardeners can go in and start preparing the soil for spring planting.
